Types of Governors and Governance Structure
Composition of the Governing Body
Round Hill School has a governing body of 18 members with representatives from 4 categories.
The categories of governor are as follows:-
Parent - Parent governors are elected by members of the parent community. They must have legal parental responsibility for a child registered as a pupil at the school. If insufficient parents stand for election, the governing body can appoint parent governors.
Staff - Staff governors are elected by all staff, either teaching or support staff. The head teacher is a member of the governing body by virtue of his/her office and counts as a member of the staff category.
Local Authority -This category of governors is appointed by the Local Authority.
Co-opted - Co-opted governors are appointed by the governing body through a skills audit. Governing bodies are encouraged to recruit representatives from local businesses and charitable organisations. This category can include parents and members of staff or elected members of the LA. Appointments are made by nominations and voting by all governors at the full governing body meeting.
Governance Structure
In 2017 the Governing Body proactively engaged an External Review of Governance. Following this we decided to restructure around an assurance-centric model. We have two meetings each term. The first of which is a Strategy Meeting where we discern the strategic priorities for the term and delagate assurance work for the term. Towards the end of each term we meet for an Assurance Meeting where Governors can review the findings of Governor visits, Head Teacher and Staff reports, latest data points, any external reports etc. This creates an efficient, timely, complete view on progress through the school year. Each Governor holds a Lead Governor Role on a particular aspect of Governance eg. Safeguarding, Pupil Premium, SEND. This allows governors to train and specialise in an area and input into Whole board meetings.
Once a year the Lead Pay Governors meet to oversee and monitor the appraisal process for all teaching staff in line with Round Hill Appraisal Policy. To receive recommendations for staff's yearly pay review and any exceptional pay decisions, consider these in line with Round Hill Pay Policy and agree and document any appropriate changes to pay.
