Newsletter 09 - 6th January 2017

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL

We are just starting to settle in to the Spring Term, and as usual the children are pleased to be back with their friends.  It has been lovely to hear many stories from the children about their Christmas holidays and it sounds like everyone had a great time.

MIDDAY SUPERVISORS NEEDED

We need some more Midday Supervisors either as back up for the staff team we already have or possibly as a permanent role.  If you are interested please call in to the school office and talk to Isobel Greenhalgh the School Business Manager who will explain more about the role.

TOY DONATIONS - STAY AND PLAY GROUP

As mentioned in the last Newsletter of 2016 Mrs Harrod and Ms Eddison will be hosting a stay and play group for some children in Foundation and KS1.

If any parents have any toys or games that children no longer use or have outgrown, please could you kindly consider donating them to the Stay and Play Group.

REMINDER - PUNCTUALITY

I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that we regularly monitor when pupils arrive in the morning. As a school we place great importance on being on time for school.  You may have noticed this in the Home/School Agreement in your child’s School Planner.  The first activity of the day is one of the most important as it allows children to settle quickly in readiness for the day ahead.

School start times are as follows:

KS2 8.50 a.m.

KS1 8.55 a.m.

EYFS 9.00 a.m.

Please ensure your children are on the playground before this time so they can enter the school with their classmates and begin morning routines promptly.  We understand that there will be times when children are late and as long as this does not happen regularly there is nothing to worry about.  Should lateness become a concern we will contact you to discuss the matter further.

PARENTS’ FORUM

The next Parents’ Forum Meeting is on Wednesday 25th January 2016 2.00 p.m. – 3.20 p.m. attendance at the last meeting was very good. Please let us know if you are attending so that an appropriate room can be allocated.  Last term I also held a later Parents’ Forum meeting at 6.00 p.m. and I would like to do so again, Please let us know if you are interested in attending this later Parents’ Forum meeting by contacting the school office.  As always, this later event will only go ahead if there is sufficient interest so it is important to let us know if you intend to come along.

AND FINALLY…THE X FACTOR AT ROUND HILL

What a busy term we had in the autumn.  As usual I have compiled these into a list and added them to the end of the newsletter.

SCHOOL CALENDAR - DIARY DATES

Yours sincerely,

X-FACTOR

•             The e-Newsletters contain regular updates on the success stories that happen in school. Including dates for the whole year ahead and reminders of things to look out for on the school website.  They are also a valuable way of communicating about e-safety and a place to signpost activities in the local community.

•             All children received new and improved versions of their School Planner (packed with useful information about school)  which reinforces our school dress and behaviour codes and also has details of how parents can support their children with learning at home.    In addition to newly updated KS1 and KS2 planners we have created Year 3/4 and EYFS bespoke planners.

•             At the termly Parents’ Forum Meeting Richard Jones, chair of governors, talked about collaboration with other schools and asked parents for their thoughts; we talked about the library closures and the implications for Round Hill; we talked about PE kit and homework and we sought feedback about the transition event in the summer term.  Click here to see the Parents’ Forum Blog.

•             We continue to celebrate writing in school by using our 'Star Writer' notice board which is located near the hall. Each week class teachers will choose a child who has produced a piece of ‘star writing’. This work will be displayed on the Star Writer Notice Board the following week so that parents are able to come and see their child’s work.

•             Good Work Assemblies continue to showcase the excellent work that our children are doing in school. These are a real celebration of the children’s work whilst also giving them an excellent opportunity to improve their presentation and speaking and listening skills. These were very well received and will continue to be a feature of the work we do this year.

•             We held a harvest assembly in October and received plenty of donations from parents.  This year we collected produce for Hope House on Boundary Road in Beeston; the display of food was wonderful.

•             As part of our International Ambassadors’ work we received letters from children in the Ukraine.  KS2 children wrote back and Miss Smith delivered the letters in person. Click here for more information.

•             The Book Fair was a great success and we raised nearly £600. We have been able to purchase lots of new books for Round Hill.

•             Thanks to Mr Abdy, Cross Country Club/Team and Football Club/Teams started again in the autumn term.  In cross country, Rosie finished off the series of races with another victory making it three wins out of three and ensuring that she won the individual gold medal. Libby and Daisy made up the remaining scoring positions for the team with Ciara not far behind them. This meant that overall, the Year 6 girls' team finished in a fantastic 2nd place in the County! In the boys’ race, Frankie had a great debut run against children in the year above him and finished in 5th.

•             Thanks to Mrs Abasspour and Miss Owen for running our Netball Club/Team,

•             We also ran the school choirs, the school orchestra and Chess Club/Teams.

•             For the second time we held highly successful KS1 Parent/Child Reading Days in October.  It was a great opportunity for parents to share a story with their children. Over 50 volunteers supported/attended on each day.

•             We held a special Remembrance assembly in November.

•             We held a ‘Children in Need’ fundraising event where children/adults dressed up in spots There were some fantastic costumes and we managed to raise over £345.95.

•             As in previous terms, some parents/carers were invited to longer consultation meetings, now known as ‘Taking Time to Talk Conversations’ as part of our ‘Achievement for All’ project work. www.afa3as.org.uk

•             The Year 6 children took part in their residential to Beaumanor Hall, Leicestershire and had a fantastic time.  We were very proud of their attitude and behaviour.  Click here to see some pictures. The children were a real credit to their parents and school.

•             EYFS held a Learning Workshop as an introduction to how the EYFS team work

•             EYFS held their celebration Christmas concert which was not only well attended but also well received by parents and extended families.

•             We welcomed the attendance of many of the governors at several of the above events.

•             The Christmas Fair took place for the first time on a Saturday this year and was well supported once more by parents and of course the rha (The school’s PTA).

•             The Key stage 1 production of The Jolly Christmas Postman was one of the many highlights of the term in KS1

•             We sent Children along to a Festival of Light event with Mrs Lockhart and Mrs Woolley.

•             The children were treated to a visit from a saxophone ensemble from the University of Nottingham. The university students introduced the different types of saxophone before playing a few pieces including music from "The Looney Tunes" and "The Teddy Bear's Picnic".

•             Mrs Lynn Lowe successfully cooked almost 400 hot school Christmas dinners.  All the staff helped out and every child received a Christmas cracker.  We were once again able to make sure every child who wanted a dinner could have one.

•             All classes held Christmas parties at the end of term.

•             The end of year festive school orchestra and choir concert was amazing once again.  Please do make a note in your diary to come along and see one of these concerts as they definitely have the X Factor.

•             Children from Year 5 and 6 performed Christmas Carols at the Catholic Church.

What a busy and fantastic term which certainly fits the description of the added ‘Xtra Factor’.
